Nuclear Energy Services

We are the sole U.S. supplier of UF₆, an irreplaceable component in the production of nuclear fuel.

WE ARE THE ONLY UF₆ SUPPLIER IN THE U.S.

Solstice is proud to support the global nuclear energy sector and is well-positioned to contribute to a multinational initiative announced by the U.S. and 30 other nations to triple nuclear generation by 2050.

Solstice Advanced Materials is the sole U.S. supplier of uranium hexafluoride (UF₆), a critical and irreplaceable component in the production of nuclear fuel.

UF₆ A CRITICAL PART OF THE NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE

For more than 65 years, the Metropolis Works Facility in Metropolis, Illinois, has operated as a national strategic asset, supplying the highest-quality UF₆ to nuclear utilities in the United States and around the world. The facility, which operates under a 40-year license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), converts uranium ore concentrate from global mines into UF₆ using Solstice’s proprietary dry fluoride volatility process, which is recognized for its efficiency, reliability and safety.

After Solstice’s conversion process, UF₆ is enriched and fabricated by other service providers into nuclear fuel that powers reactors generating nearly 20% of U.S. electricity and representing the largest single source of carbon-free energy in the country, according to the World Nuclear Association.

ConverDyn, a partnership between Solstice and General Atomics, serves as the exclusive marketing agent for all UF₆ produced at the Metropolis Works Facility.

From Ore to Energy: UF₆ Fuels Nuclear Power

Uranium hexafluoride (UF6) is an essential component of the nuclear fuel cycle. UF6 is produced in the “front end” of the nuclear fuel cycle, after the uranium ore is mined, milled and refined. After the conversion process, the UF6 is enriched and then converted to uranium oxide as part of the fuel fabrication process. The fuel is used within nuclear reactors to generate electricity.
