European Patent Office Upholds Validity of Solstice Advanced Materials’ Foundational HFO-1234yf Process Patent

Decision reinforces strength of Solstice patent portfolio to protect leadership in next-generation, low-global-warming refrigerant technology

Morris Plains, N.J., February 23, 2026Solstice Advanced Materials, (NASDAQ: SOLS), a global leader in high-performance specialty materials, announced today that the Boards of Appeal at the European Patent Office has upheld the validity of European Patent EP 2546225 (‘225 patent) owned by Solstice, a foundational process patent relating to the manufacture of HFO-1234yf. The Boards of Appeal issued their decision on Feb. 9.

HFO-1234yf, marketed by Solstice as Solstice® yf Refrigerant, is a near drop-in replacement for R-134a in automobile air-conditioning applications that helps automakers around the world comply with EU low global warming potential (GWP) requirements. The refrigerant has been adopted for use in hundreds of millions of vehicles worldwide.

Although certain earlier patents and applications have expired, Solstice’s 1234yf intellectual property (IP) portfolio contains over 1,400 issued patents and pending applications. Approximately 350 cases are directed to unique compositions and uses, and over 1,000 cases are process-related. The portfolio includes patents with expiration dates extending into the 2030s.

“Today’s decision reaffirms the strength of Solstice’s IP portfolio,” said Julien Soulet, Solstice Europe Vice President and General Manager. “Our next-generation technologies such as Solstice® yf Refrigerant are the result of substantial investments in research, development and commercialization. While certain unlicensed suppliers are circulating inaccurate information about our portfolio, the facts are clear – our intellectual property remains strong and enforceable. We will continue to vigorously protect our patented innovations and pursue appropriate enforcement actions against unauthorized use.”

Solstice’s predecessor company, Honeywell, previously filed three patent infringement actions in Europe based on the ’225 patent: German case numbers 19O6599/18 and 19O6598/18 and Czech case number 21 Cm 422018. Solstice is committed to continuing to act against unauthorized activities related to its patents.

“Fair return on investment is essential to enable leading companies to continue to bring new solutions to market. For this reason, Solstice remains steadfast in its commitment to stopping infringement wherever it occurs throughout the world,” said Colleen Szuch, Solstice Chief Intellectual Property Counsel. “By defending and enforcing its IP rights, Solstice can continue to innovate next-generation technologies that support customers’ evolving needs.”
