Advancing Polyurethane Through Sustainable Innovation
The polyurethane industry has undergone major shifts over the last four decades. Manufacturers have transitioned from high global warming potential (GWP) hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) to ultra-low GWP solutions — a shift driven by technological and formulation innovations that directly reduce global warming emissions and meet regulatory requirements.
- Solstice® HFO technology delivers an ultra-low GWP up to 99.9% lower than the HFCs it replaces.
- HFO blowing agents improve energy efficiency across homes, appliances and the cold chain.
- Solstice blowing agents are manufactured in 5 sites across the globe, serving customers in 120 countries.
- A network of 300+ engineers and technicians drive R&D, with fifth-generation molecule technology in development.
Solstice Advanced Materials has been at the forefront of this evolution. Through a commitment to innovation, Solstice Hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) technology has been the basis for many of these breakthroughs, continuing to serve as a catalyst for positive change.
Ultra-Low GWP, Ultra-High Impact
Solstice HFO technology was designed to replace high GWP HFCs without sacrificing performance. Early adopters have helped accelerate global sustainability by incorporating this technology into more environmentally responsible products.
HFO technology features an ultra-low GWPs up to 99.9% lower than the HFCs it replaces. It’s designed for a variety of applications — everything from spray foams and solvents to automotive air conditioning, industrial refrigeration and medical inhalers — and helps reduce carbon footprints across industries.
Products like Solstice blowing agents help temper rising energy costs and create more comfortable living environments by insulating homes, appliances and the cold chain. Moving forward, HFOs are key to improving energy efficiency and enhancing daily life for people around the world.

Investing in What's Next
Our approach to innovation begins with a steadfast commitment to science and our people. Solstice Advanced Materials continues to invest in research and development to ensure our products remain at the forefront of performance and reliability. We've invested heavily in building a global supply chain that includes 5 manufacturing sites, 2 R&D centers and 6 technical service hubs across the world to better serve our customers in 120 countries.
In the lab, we are backed by 300+ engineers and technicians whose expertise is behind every solution we deliver, and a global network of support staff is ready to provide guidance wherever customers need it. As we look to the future, we are developing fifth-generation molecule technology to help customers meet performance and regulatory requirements while working to create a cleaner tomorrow for future generations.
Safeguarding Innovation
As an industry leader, we advocate for the safety and security of our customers. As such, we must address those who seek to exploit innovation and put the security of our customers at risk.
In the past several years, multiple entities have emerged with HFO-1234ze(E) and HFO-1233zd(E) for sale in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and Europe. However, Solstice has not granted these entities any rights under its IP portfolio to make and sell these products in those regions.
The sale of these products violates Solstice’s intellectual property, and the unknown conditions under which they are manufactured may present legal and safety risks for both sellers and purchasers who are unaware of these issues.
Solstice takes immense pride in rigorous research, development and testing to ensure our products’ long-term performance and efficacy. While we go to great lengths for customer satisfaction, our competitors may not. Potential lapses in formulation and testing may result in poor performance, ultimately affecting the bottom line and operations of everyone from the initial distributor to the end user.
Looking Ahead
For more than eight decades, Solstice has proven that environmental responsibility and high performance can go hand in hand, and we remain committed to investing in the people, technology and partnerships that drive progress while protecting the innovations that make it possible.
